Super Grafx ROMs

Super Grafx Information

Super Grafx is an improved version of the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 console. At the begning known as PC-Engine 2, which was supposed to be a real 16-bit system with better graphics and audio. The release was expected to happen in 1990, however, the final version of the console was named SuperGrafx and it was released earlier than expected – at the end of 1989. Super Grafx slightly differs from its predecessor PC-Engine – only slightly improved graphics. The audio hardware remained the same, and instead of the promised 16-bit processor it was based on the same processor as PC-Engine 8-bit HuC6280A, modified 65SC02 clocked at 1.79 or 7.16 MHz (could be changed on software level).

Compared to PC-Engine, SuperGrafx has four times more working RAM for the processor, the second video chip has its own VRAM and priority controller chip, which allows to output video from both chips by combining the output in different ways. Super Grafx supports two independent scrolling background layers, as Sega Mega Drive / Genesis, while PC-Engine supports only one.

SuperGrafx was not well received by developers, mainly because of problems with the software, which was written to support new features. In total, only 5 games were released for SuperGrafx which could take advantage of new features. The average cost of one game was about $10. A common misconception is that an additional video equipment and features slowed down the CPU, was the main reason why so few games have been released for this console. Despite using the same processor as in the PC-Engine, it was working fine with new graphics subsystem, since the main load falls on the VDP.
