Thomson MO5 ROMs

Thomson MO5 Information

Thomson MO5 is the first generation of 8-bit computers released by Thomson, at that time known as SIMIV, in 1984 in France. The developers aimed to create a cheap computer that could compete with ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 – leaders of the market of home computers. Mostly, Thomson MO5 computers were sold in France and for various reasons they couldn’t compete with mentioned above computers, so the company decided to close the production of MO5 model and focus on the MO6 model, which is an improved version that was released in 1985. MO5 were mainly used in schools as educational tools at that time.

Thomson MO5 was based on Motorola 6809E chip with a frequency of 1 MHz, 48 KB of RAM, integrated BASIC and 40x25 text resolution. Also, Thomson MO5 is known as a cut-down version of the TO-7/70, which was released at the same time. Thomson focused a lot on the look of the device, therefore it was very attractive in terms of design, anthracite color and pleasant lines. As for keyboard, it was made of rubber keys, which is much more convenient than flat membrane keyboards of that time. Keyboard also included special BASIC keys that allows user to execute desired statements, of course, it was possible to introduce commands by typing them.

Thomson MO5 was the first computer for many computer enthusiasts who started learning programming. It is known that more than 200 applications and games were developed specifically for MO5 computers.
